Owsley County was finally able to return to competition after a two-week weather-related delay of their scheduled games. They added a game to their schedule to replace another game that was canceled and unable to be rescheduled. The new game was against the Paris Lady Hounds and was played at their gym on Feb. 4.
Paris held the lead throughout the first half and was ahead 32-19 at intermission. The Lady Owls actually won the second half 21-18, but the final score was a 50-40 Paris victory.
“This was a quickly scheduled road game, but we are just happy to be playing again, particularly with the district tournament in less than two weeks,” stated Lady Owls coach Travis Smith.
Owsley was led in scoring by Kamilla Marcum with 15 points and 19 rebounds, adding to her long list of double-doubles this season. Delaney Smith scored 9 points and had 5 assists. Lauren Gay had 10 points, and Harley Dooley scored 6.
Mia Mason was the high scorer for Paris with 12 points.
Owsley’s next game was at home the next night, Feb. 5, against Oneida Baptist. The Lady Owls had no problems with the Lady Mountaineers and rolled to a 76-20 victory.
Kamilla Marcum led the way again with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Lauren Gay, who has been playing some of her best basketball of the season recently, scored a season-high 16 points. Delaney Smith scored 11 points with 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Harley Dooley scored 5 points, Kierah Shouse 7, Madi Cornett 4, Kiley Taylor 3, and Nala Pittman 4.
Jacklyn Lewis led OBI with 8 points.
The Lady Owls played their third game in as many nights when Leslie County visited the Palace on Friday, Feb. 6. The Lady Eagles start five veteran players, and although the Lady Owls held a 17-16 lead after the first quarter, the youth vs. the veterans began to show results in the last three quarters. Leslie held a 38-24 lead at halftime as they outscored Owsley 20-7 in the second quarter. Many of their points came off forced turnovers and converted layups by their quick guard tandem of Taylor Couch and Ava Napier, who combined for 30 points in the game. Leslie pressed the entire game and forced 24 turnovers.
However, the first quarter was a bright spot for the Lady Owls and could be a foreshadowing of the future possibilities for the young team. During the quarter, they ran smooth offensive sets and handled the press fairly well.
They also made three shots from behind the arc (and ended the game with five treys). Owsley held a one-point lead after one quarter. But they weren’t able to hold onto it, and Leslie went on to win a 66-37 decision.
Owsley was led in scoring by Kamilla Marcum with 15 points and added 11 rebounds. Kiley Taylor had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Delaney Smith scored 5 points and had 6 assists. Harley Dooley scored 3 points, Lauren Gay 3, Madi Cornett 3, and Nala Pittman had 2 points.
Owsley's next games are at Martin County on Sunday, Feb. 8, and at home vs. Jackson County on Feb. 10 and at home vs Powell County on Feb. 11. The Jackson County and Powell County games will be streamed on PRTC-TV.
