The district tournament at Lee County will begin on February 23, with the girls playing a doubleheader, and the boys playing the following evening. Teams are finishing their schedules as they prepare for the postseason. Some recent games played by the Lady Owls and Owls were quickly scheduled to replace games canceled during the two weeks of snowy weather. I am behind on some game reports, but I have received some stats and results from the scorebook from Coach Tyson Gross, and I will provide an overview of the recent contests.
Owsley played a home game against Model High from Richmond on Senior Day. The game was part of a doubleheader with the girls, who played Pike Central. The girls have no seniors on their team, but the boys have three. For those who did not attend the event, it can still be watched on YouTube on the PRTC-TV streaming platform. The senior players honored between the girls' and boys' games were Chase Pryse, Keegan Herald, Brayden Peters, and manager Jacob Arnold. The senior cheerleaders honored were Alyssa Price and Lilly Thomas.
Owsley jumped out to an 18-6 lead against the Patriots and led 34-21 at halftime. The Owls advanced their lead to 22 points at the end of the third quarter and went on to claim a 75-57 victory, improving their record to 11-11.
Senior Keegan Herald led the Owls in scoring with 23 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan McCoy scored 17 points, including four three-pointers. Senior Chase Pryse finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds, sophomore Jarred Napier had 9 points and 7 assists, sophomore Matt Wright scored 8 points, and sophomore Daniel Caudell had 5 points.
Jaydon Bingham led the Patriots with 22 points.
The Owls played district opponent Powell County on Wednesday. The Pirates are undefeated in district play, with a 6-0 record, and are the top seed in the district tournament. They are also one of the top three teams in the region and are considered a favorite to win the regional title and make their school's first trip to the state tournament since 2003. They also won a regional title in 1974.
In the 56th district, Powell County will play Estill County, the fourth seed. Second-seeded Owsley County will play third-seeded Lee County. The girls' tournament will begin on Monday, February 23, and the boys' tournament will start on Tuesday, February 24.
The Owls started strong against Powell County, leading 16-15 after the first quarter. However, a strong second quarter gave the Pirates a firm lead, outscoring the Owls 30-12 in the period to take a halftime lead of 45-28. Powell County rode a wave of eight three-pointers and strong defense to eventually secure a 90-64 victory.
Owsley's Jordan McCoy scored 16 points, including three three-pointers. Keegan Herald scored 12 points, Matt Wright had 10 points and 9 rebounds, Jarred Napier scored 9 points, Chase Pryse had 6 points with 11 rebounds and 4 assists, Bryson Bowling scored 6 points, Daniel Caudell had 3 points, and Matt Darling had 2 points.
Powell County was led by Tucker Ramsey with 23 points, and Conner Morguson scored 21 points.
The Owls games this week will be Monday, Feb. 16 against Jackson City at home and they travel to Oneida Baptist Tuesday, Feb. 17 for their season finale.
