BOONEVILLE, Ky. (December 20, 2025) — Kentucky State Police are investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday afternoon in Owsley County.
According to Kentucky State Police at the Richmond Post, troopers were contacted just before 2:00 p.m. on December 20 by the Owsley County Sheriff’s Department requesting assistance in the investigation of a deceased female found inside a residence on Left Fork Holly Road in Booneville.
Kentucky State Police troopers and detectives, along with the Owsley County Coroner, responded to the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that Cloyd Burkhart (pictured), 55, of Booneville, fatally shot Crystal Sexton, 51, also of Booneville, following an argument inside the residence.
Burkhart was taken into custody at the scene without incident. He has been charged with Murder, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. He was lodged in the Three Forks Detention Center.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by KSP Detective Casey Caudill. Assistance at the scene was provided by Kentucky State Police personnel, the Owsley County Sheriff’s Office, and the Owsley County Coroner’s Office.
All are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
