LADY OWLS 38
BREATHITT COUNTY 48
(Overtime)
Owsley County mounted a big fourth quarter comeback in Jackson to put the game with Breathitt County into overtime knotted at 38 points, but in the end the Lady Cats were able to claim the victory with a 48-38 final.
Breathitt scored first in the extra period and after the Lady Owls failed to score on their possession Breathitt decided a strategy to play delay tactics with a 2 point lead and Owsley was forced to foul. Freshman guard Lexie Combs connected on 10 for 10 free throw shooting in the final minutes of overtime to secure the win.
The game started slowly for both teams with Breathitt holding a 6-3 lead after the first quarter, with all the Lady Cats points coming from a pair of 3-pointers. The teams picked up the pace and the offense in the second quarter with Breathitt winning the quarter 13-12 to hold a 19-15 lead at the half.
Breathitt extended their lead to 33-25 heading to the last quarter. However, the Lady Owls owned the fourth period, outscoring the Lady Cats 13-4. They clamped down their defense and held the Lady Cats to a trey and a free throw. The Lady Owls meanwhile found success going inside to their 6’3 sophomore center Macey Brown, and guards Delaney Smith and Kenzie Grubb also scored to help tie the game and force overtime. Macey Brown almost won the game in regulation for Owsley when her shot in the final seconds of regulation looked like it was good but rolled off the rim. She was fouled, though, and hit both free throws to tie the game 38-38.
The Lady Owls had the opportunity to strike first in the overtime but Brown’s interior shot rimmed out and Breathitt scored on two free throws on their possession to take a 2 point lead and from there onward Combs was able to score all of the points of the quarter for Breathitt at the foul line. No field goals were scored in the overtime.
Macey Brown led Owsley with 18 points and 11 rebounds, another double-double to add to the many she has had this year. Delaney Smith and Kenzie Grubb each scored 8 points and Kamilla Marcum and Kiley Taylor each added 2. Marcum also pulled down 8 rebounds.
Breathitt’s Lexie Combs scored a game high 28 points. Emily Neace was also in double figures for the Lady Cats with 10 points.
Owsley’s record is now 12-13 and Breathitt improved to 15-10.
The Lady Owls next game is a very important one at Estill County Saturday, a district contest that will finalize the seeding in the district tournament. Going into the game Estill is in first place with an undefeated record and Owsley in second with one loss to Estill. Owsley would have to win by 15 points to tie for first seed and force a tiebreaker decision. However, an Owsley win of over 15 would put them as number 1 seed. On the other hand if Owsley does win but only by 14 points or less, then Estill will be the top seed and play Powell in the district, while Owsley would be second seed and play third seed Lee.
